Get Organized! Get Comfortable!
On March 19 Jean Hayes from Jean Hayes Organizing joined us to discuss ways to get organized and stay comfortable. We talked with her afterwards about some of the things we learned!
1) Why do you do what you do?
Organizing has been a passion of mine for a long time and I recently figured out how to turn it into a job (March 2018). Teaching and helping others learn the process is also important to me.
2) What is your first piece of advice to someone trying to become more organized?
First piece of advice is to start small: one drawer, one closet, one desk, one chair, one room.... the whole is overwhelming and perfection is not the goal, but getting started is.
3) What are your favorite organizing tricks?
Favorite organizing trick: Dump out the entire drawer or box or closet or cabinet that you want to sort in the middle of the floor. Then pick out the keepers, your favorite things, the treasures, the things that spark joy. Next, decide what can be donated and what can be trashed or recycled. Finally, assign a home for all items that are being kept.
4) What do you think is the biggest misconception about organizing?
Biggest misconception about organizing is that you should be able to do it on your own and that you should know how to do it. People need to be taught how to organize and many of us were not taught this. And it's never too late!!! Just start.
5) What is your organizing advice for people who are planning to move?
People who are planning to move should prioritize. Lots of lists, lots of boxes, and lots of help. Hire an Organizer!!
