Protecting Yourself from Common Elder Scams: Medicare and Healthcare Fraud

In the third edition of our series on elder scams, we are focusing on Medicare and healthcare fraud

As we age, staying vigilant against scams targeting seniors becomes increasingly crucial. Elder scams are on the rise, exploiting the vulnerability and trust of older adults. These scams take many forms, including fraudulent investment schemes and identity theft. As an estate planning firm committed to protecting our clients' interests, we aim to highlight these common elder scams and offer strategies to guard against them.

Medicare and Healthcare Fraud: Scammers often pose as Medicare representatives or healthcare providers, offering free services or medical equipment in exchange for personal information. Warn seniors to be wary of unsolicited calls or visits from individuals claiming to represent Medicare. Advise them to review their Medicare statements regularly and report any discrepancies or suspicious charges immediately.

Advise your loved ones to:

  • Avoid sharing personal information: Remind them not to give out their Medicare number, Social Security number, or any other personal information to unsolicited callers or visitors.

  • Verify the source: Encourage them to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be from Medicare by calling Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

  • Review statements regularly: Advise them to regularly review their Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) for any discrepancies or suspicious charges.

  • Report suspicious activity: Instruct them to report any discrepancies or suspicious charges to Medicare immediately by contacting the Medicare fraud hotline at 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477).

  • Educate themselves: Encourage them to stay informed about common Medicare scams and fraud tactics by visiting the Medicare website or attending community education sessions.

By taking these steps, seniors can protect themselves from becoming victims of Medicare and healthcare fraud.

Awareness of common elder scams is crucial for protecting your financial and emotional well-being. By staying informed and taking preventative measures, seniors can defend themselves against exploitation and fraud.
